Is the Hong Kong Airport Express Worth It? Fares, Times & the Free Return
The Airport Express is the fastest way from Hong Kong International Airport into the city, but at HK$120 to Central it is also the priciest train you will take here. So is the Hong Kong Airport Express worth it? For most arrivals the answer is yes, and there is one free perk that makes it far better value than the sticker price suggests. Here is the honest breakdown of what it costs, how long it takes, and the two situations where I would skip it.
The short answer
If you are landing with luggage and want to be at your hotel in under 40 minutes with zero fuss, the Airport Express is worth it. It is fast, spotless, runs every 10 to 12 minutes, and drops you at three well-connected stations with free hotel shuttle buses waiting. Where it stops being worth it is if you are travelling light, on a tight budget, or staying somewhere the airport buses reach directly. More on those cases below.
How much does the Airport Express cost?
Fares depend on which of the three city stations you get off at, and on how you pay. Tapping an Octopus card is about HK$10 cheaper than buying a Smart Ticket at the counter. Here is the part most guides get wrong: that single fare also covers a same-day return, so if you are back at the airport before midnight, the return leg costs you nothing extra.
- Tsing Yi: HK$73 by Octopus, HK$80 by ticket. Child HK$36.50 or HK$40.
- Kowloon: HK$105 by Octopus, HK$115 by ticket. Child HK$52.50 or HK$57.50.
- Hong Kong Station (Central): HK$120 by Octopus, HK$130 by ticket. Child HK$60 or HK$65.
Coming back on a different day? A Round Trip ticket stays valid for 30 days and costs HK$130 to Tsing Yi, HK$195 to Kowloon, or HK$215 to Hong Kong Station. Travelling as a group of four is cheaper still, at HK$85 each to Hong Kong Station or HK$78 each to Kowloon.
Children under 3 travel free. Compared with the rest of the MTR, where most trips cost a few dollars, HK$120 feels steep, and that is exactly what the "why is it so expensive" question is really asking. The price buys you a dedicated airport line with luggage racks and no changes, rather than a cheap seat on a standard commuter train. Whether that trade is worth it comes down to how much your first hour in Hong Kong is worth to you.
How long does the Airport Express take?
This is where the Airport Express earns its fare. Journey times from the airport are roughly:
- About 14 minutes to Tsing Yi
- About 22 minutes to Kowloon
- About 24 minutes to Hong Kong Station in Central
Trains run every 10 to 12 minutes for most of the day, with the first departure from the airport at around 05:54 and the last at around 00:48. Nothing else gets you into Central this quickly. A taxi can take 40 minutes or more in traffic, and the airport buses take 40 to 70 minutes depending on your stop. The free same-day return that most visitors miss
Here is the perk that quietly changes the maths. If you make a round trip to and from the airport on the same day, and you tap in and out with the same Octopus card, contactless bank card, or e-wallet QR code, the return journey is free. It is an official MTR offer, not a promo code you have to hunt for.
That makes the Airport Express genuinely good value on a layover: pop into the city for a few hours, and the trip back to the airport costs you nothing. The other perks: check-in, shuttles and comfort
A few extras genuinely add value and are easy to overlook:
- Free hotel shuttle buses run from Hong Kong Station and Kowloon Station to a list of major hotels, so you often avoid a second taxi at the end. Some routes have been trimmed recently, so check the current shuttle timetable for your hotel before you rely on it.
- In-town check-in. If you fly with a participating airline, you can check your bags and collect boarding passes at Hong Kong or Kowloon Station up to 90 minutes before departure, then explore the city luggage-free on your last day. Confirm your airline still offers it, as the list changes.
- Comfort. Wide seats, dedicated luggage racks, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. After a long-haul flight, that is worth something.
When the Airport Express is not worth it
Two situations where I would skip it. First, if you are on a real budget and travelling light: the airport buses cost roughly HK$33 to HK$48 and reach most tourist districts directly, so a couple can save around HK$150 versus two Airport Express fares. Second, if you are a group of three or four with luggage heading to one address, a taxi splits well and takes you door to door for around HK$260 to HK$335 depending on where you stay. How to pay and save
The simplest way to ride is to tap in with an Octopus card, which also covers the rest of your trip on the MTR, buses, trams and the Star Ferry. Children and seniors can pay less with a discounted Octopus card. Contactless bank cards and e-wallet QR codes work at the Airport Express gates too.
